Redirect Tool & Navigation Links

How to Create a Navigation Link

The Redirect Tool can be used to add a navigation link to your left hand course navigation menu to a website or internal Canvas content. When clicking on the link, users will see content displayed in their content pane within Canvas or be given the option to open a new tab for external websites.

Procedure -

  1. Select Settings on your course menu
  2. Select the Apps tab
  3. Click on the Redirect Tool icon - the large curved blue arrow. If there are a lot of apps, you can search for it
  4. Click on the +Add App button
  5. Fill in the fields like the following screenshot example -

redirect add app popup

On the above example, we have chosen to redirect to Google and want to show it inside of your course navigation with the name of "Google". Click Add App. You may have to refresh your page to update the navigation menu. You will now see a new link named "Google" on your navigation menu.

Go ahead and click on the "Google" navigation link. You will get a message that it refuses to connect, this means the website doesn't allow itself to be embedded in Canvas. You must delete and recreate the app and make sure to select Force open in new tab. Unfortunately, you cannot edit the app and change this setting - so, lesson learned. :)

To edit or delete the app -

  1. Go to Settings, Apps, View App Configurations
  2. Scroll down the list until you find the "Google" app you created.
  3. Click on the Sprocket icon, and select Edit
  4. You can now edit or delete the app
