Weekly Interaction

Can a visitor to your course see weekly interaction within Canvas?

To be considered a distance education course (vs. a correspondence course, which does not qualify for financial aid), the instructor must interact with students regularly throughout the semester.

The distance education online classroom must include regular instructor-student contact and opportunities for student-student interaction.  You get to choose how you do this and it can be very simple.  Here's a table that shows ways you could meet interaction requirements:

Instructional examples for each type of interaction
Instructor - Student Student - Student
Canvas Discussion with instructor participation X
Messages via Canvas (Inbox, archived chat) X X
Online conferences (archived Zoom) X X

ADA Compliant 3rd party auxiliary platforms/LTIs

Please note:

  • You must be prepared to allow a reviewer into your third-party platform through a single sign-on within Canvas.
  • The instructor should communicate with students when unable to provide regular contact due to unexpected reasons such as illness or a family emergency.
  • Content must be ADA compliant (Accessible).  See our Accessibility Module for details.
  • See Cuyamaca's Regular and Effective Contact Policy for best practices and examples.
