Working with YouTube
You can post your videos on YouTube or curate videos from others (make sure they are captioned).
Embedding videos on a Canvas page
A simple way to embed YouTube videos in Canvas is to paste the ULS followed by a space.
For a nicer look, click the icon that looks like a plug, then select YouTube. This allows you to choose the size. You may need to choose View All the first time.
If that doesn't work, go to the YouTube video, click the Share button, click Embed, and copy and paste the code into the Canvas HTML view. You can change the height and width in the code if you like.
You can also link to YouTube videos in Canvas Studio. This is handy if you would like to add quiz questions or captions. For details, see How do I add media to a collection in Canvas Studio? Links to an external site.
If the YouTube video access is restricted, you may need to use this method:
- Find the YouTube video you want to embed. Click on the Share link, and then click on the Embed icon (typically the gray circle on the left at the top of the Share screen). Do NOT choose the "copy" link.
- The Embed Video window pops up with the embed HTML code. Click COPY in the bottom right corner of the Embed Video window.
- In Canvas, open the textbox and place your cursor where you want to embed the YouTube video.
- From the edit menu bar in Canvas, click Insert. A drop-down menu pops up. Select Embed. Paste the code you copied from YouTube in the Canvas Embed Code textbox.
- Click Submit in the bottom right corner.

Add Captions

- Wait until the automatic subtitles are created. You should be able to see them when you view the video on YouTube.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio Links to an external site..
- From the left menu, select Subtitles.
- Click the video you want to add captions or subtitles to.
- Under “Subtitles”, click More
next to the subtitles you want to edit.
- Review automatic captions and edit or remove Links to an external site. any parts that haven't been properly transcribed.
This @ONE video demonstrates the process:
If you have a lot of videos or long videos, it might make more sense to use Canvas Studio, which has very accurate captioning and editing within Canvas, or 3CMedia which offers free captioning.
