Watch this documentary about the early years of R&R, and answer the questions on the first page of the worksheet (the video questions).

Here are some fun things to look out for in the video:

1. The very first thing you see in the video is a skit from a '50s TV show. There is a boy upstairs listening to "Hound Dog," an R&B hit on his record player. The brother, downstairs, is listening to some "nice" music. They go back and forth until the boy's record player blows up! That boy (Ricky Nelson) became a R&R star!

2. Steve Allen had a TV show, and he had lots of R&R performers on it. In this clip, he gets laughs from his audience by simply reading the lyrics of a current hit, like a poem.

3.. Steve Allen had Jerry Lee Lewis on his show. During his piano solo, the wild performer kicked away his piano stool. A few seconds later, you see the stool fly by. Steve Allen, offscreen, had thrown it back! If you watch closely, you can see it fly by the screen.
