Brief Biography

I started out studying economics at Eureka College in Illinois and my dad contributed to my education by getting copies of all sorts of Federal Reserve materials sent to our house. I spent time in Brazil where I had an opportunity to study that country's economy and meet Werner Baer, one of the leading economists in the United States studying the Brazilian economy. He later helped me in writing a research paper exploring building an automobile factory in Brazil. During this time, I also served a mentorship in the Office of the Honorable Alexander Meigs Haig where I was exposed to a wide range of issues dealing with global governance. After graduating, my first job was in economic development as an agricultural teacher trainer in West Africa. Before going back to school, I worked in the private sector for a major publishing company. I then studied economics and governmental finance at Louisiana State University receiving an M.P.A. and later studied politics, economics, and philosophy at Heidelberg University in Germany. During my studies, I worked at the Legislative Fiscal Office in Louisiana and in the Office of Research of the Louisiana Department of Economic Development. I finished up a Ph.D. in political science focusing on political thought and international political economy at LSU and then worked in the private sector for seven years in educational and national security consulting before joining Grossmont's faculty as a tenured faculty member in the department of political economy. I have an academic interest in alternative economic paradigms, have studied with various members of the National Bureau of Economic Research, three Nobel Prize Winners, and have served on the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco's Educational Advisory Council.  I have published articles in the Encyclopedia of United States/Latin American Relations that explores the political and economic role played by the People's Republic of China in the region, the Encyclopedia of Global Justice exploring Buddhism and global justice and the Asian values debate and the Encyclopedia of Global Poverty covering International Trade, the World Bank, Structural Dependency, and Mongolia.  My most recent publication is “Pyramids of Skulls: Unacceptable Violence, Transcendence, and the Image of Timur in the Thought of Eric Voegelin and Contemporary Scholarship” for Eric Voegelin and Asia to be published by Rowan Littlefield in 2021. I am married and have three children and spend my free time meditating, playing e-sports and poker, practicing Aikido, hiking, reading, and writing.
