Topic Selection
It's time to select a topic for your writing. Your next writing assignment is about twice as long as the other assignments you have completed for this class; you will have to write at least 1,000 words (about 4 double-spaced pages).
You will also have to do research and read a lot to learn about the topic you write about. You will work on this assignment for a total of five to six weeks.
Because of that, I recommend you take your time thinking about and selecting the topic you want to write about. You don't want to get stuck with a topic you don't like for such a long time.
Important Things to Consider:
- The general topic is change. You will research a topic that you would like to learn about or you think others should learn about (this is your choice).
- You want to choose a current topic that is affecting individual lives or society as a whole.
- You will eventually also choose a specific audience to write to.
- After you research about the topic, you will decide if things related to this current situation/topic should stay as they are, or if they should change. You then have to persuade your specific audience to agree with your assessment of the current situation.
TIME TO THINK:
There are so many issues currently affecting people's lives and entire societies. What is something that you are passionate about or you are intrigued by?
- What is one specific issue you have observed recently in your personal life? What is one important way learning about this topic could benefit your life?
- Do you see a specific thing society is currently facing? How is this issue affecting society?
- Have you watched any movies, documentaries, or speeches related to current issues that you found interesting or thought-provoking? What was it about? Why did you find it interesting?
