Instructions

This activity begins the Treating Depression Lab. The data compares two treatments for depression to a placebo. In the lab you will analyze data to answer two research questions:

  1. Which of the drugs (if either) was more successful in preventing the recurrence of depression relative to the placebo?
  2. Which of the drugs (if either) delayed the recurrence of depression longer relative to the placebo?

The Treating Depression Lab has four parts:

Part 1 (quiz): questions to prepare you to analyze the data to answer the 1st research question
Part 2 (discussion): StatCrunch analysis and discussion of results to answer the 1st research question
Part 3 (quiz): questions to prepare you to analyze the data to answer the 2nd research question
Part 4 (discussion): StatCrunch analysis and discussion of results to answer the 2nd research question

This is Part 1. You have an unlimited number of attempts on Part 1. To prepare for Part 2 of the lab, you should review each attempt and use the feedback to retake the quiz until you earn 100%. Canvas will record your highest score.

FURTHER EXPLANATION for one of the questions you'll see here...

Examine the spreadsheet of data in StatCrunch. Out of the first ten individuals in the Lithium treatment group, how many had a recurrence of depression during the study?

  • Treat: 0=Lithium; 1=Imipramine; 2=Placebo
  • Outcome: 0=Success 1=Failure (recurrence of depression)

Under the column "Treat" in your dataset, count the first 10 values that are "0".   Zero is for Lithium.  Next, see who had a recurrence of depression during the study.  Under the "Outcome" column count the "1's" for failure ( recurrence of depression)

How many of the zero's that I highlighted below had an outcome of 1?
