Add Canvas Studio Videos to your Courses

Canvas Studio is a media tool that allows students and instructors to upload, create, edit, manage, share, and discuss audio and video files. Existing files can be used or new ones can be created with Studio's capture and editing tools. Quizzes can be embedded into videos, and the scores are automatically put in the Gradebook.

Studio can be found on the blue Global Navigation bar on the left of any Canvas page. It can also be found on the course menu of any course. No need to hide it from the menu because it doesn't show to students within courses. Students will access Studio through the Global Navigation bar.

Grossmont teacher Adam Deutsch created a great video that shows you how to access studio, record a video, review captions, and add it to your course.  This will answer many of your questions and help you get started.  Note that to access Studio in the New Rich Content Editor, just click the Plug icon and select Canvas Studio (View All if you don't see it).

Note: When you create captions for your video, it is turned off by default by the system. Students will need to check for "CC" displayed on the video's bottom bar. If it is not there, they can click on the "sprocket" icon on the bottom bar and see if there is a Closed Caption option. If these do not exist, captions are not available for the video.

Allow access to screen recording on Mac

Some Mac users will need to enable this setting to allow Studio to record the screen.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu   > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click Privacy.

  2. Select Screen Recording.

  3. Select the checkbox next to an app to allow it to record your screen.
Deselect the checkbox to turn off access for that app.
