💬 Research Ideas - Due SUNDAY

- Submitting a discussion post
For this discussion board, you will come up with two potential research questions that you could collect data and use statistics to answer. An ideal research question would look like this:
How does _______ influence _______? or What is the impact of ________ on ________?
I call this ideal because our course primarily deals with bivariate methods (i.e. how TWO things are related to each other). It is possible to look into more than this OR to focus on a single variable, but I ask that you come up with a question that involves two variables as that aligns with the course content. Be sure to answer the following in your post and check out the RUBRIC for additional guidance. Unlike some previous discussion boards, you can see responses before you post and you aren't only able to see your discussion group members.
Your first proposed question should require that you collect data via a survey or observing behavior. This will likely mean that your population will be Mesa students or Starbucks customers or some other population you can actually reach a reasonable sample of.
- What is your population of interest?
- What is your research question?
- Why is this research question of interest to you?
- What variables would you be collecting in your research? (i.e. GENDER of each person, NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS each hour, or PRICE per item?)
- Are there other variables that you think might influence this relationship? What are they and what do you think their impact may be?
Your second proposed question should require that you find existing data. This will likely mean that your population can be something that you couldn't reasonably collect data on like foster youth, states in the US, or professional athletes or experimental data.
- What is your population of interest?
- What is your research question?
- Why is this research question of interest to you?
- What variables would you be collecting in your research? (i.e. GENDER of each person, NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS each hour, or PRICE per item?)
For your optional responses, you can suggest additional variables that you believe they should collect that might influence that relationship, make a hypothesis about what their research will reveal, or give some ideas on how they might collect their data!
